Un ione è un atomo, un gruppo atomico o una particella subatomica con una singola quantità di carica elettrica. Gli ioni più semplici sono elettroni, protoni e particelle alfa. Uno ione con carica negativa, che ha più elettroni nel guscio di elettrone rispetto alla quantità di protoni nel nucleo, è noto come anione, in quanto è attratto dall'anodo; mentre uno ione con carica positiva, che ha meno elettroni di protoni, è noto come catione, in quanto è attratto dal catodo. Un anione poliatomico contenente ossigeno è talvolta noto come oxianion. Gli ioni sono contrassegnati come atomi neutri e molecole che agiscono elettricamente tranne che per la presenza di un "apice" che indica la quantità di carica elettrica e il numero di elettroni più di uno.
