La patria privata nella sociologia significa un'area indefinita particolarmente vicina ai membri della società. Questo concetto è simile al ritorno usata in precedenza della patria o del termine tedesco Heimat. Una patria è un'area etnica omogenea con cui l'individuo individua e vuole vivere. Il concetto di complementarità con la patria è la patria ideologica, cioè l'area dello stato in cui un individuo vive o spesso scende, perduto dallo stato con cui l'individuo si identifica. Determinare la dimensione di una patria può essere diversa per diverse unità. In alcuni casi può essere una città, spesso una regione, un distretto o un comune, ma anche un'area fuori dai confini amministrativi. A volte vengono chiamati "piccole patrie", indicando la relazione degli abitanti con una certa cultura della zona.

Ojczyzna prywatna w socjologii oznacza pewien nieokreślony obszar, który dla członków społeczeństwa jest szczególnie bliski. Pojęcie to zbliżone jest do wcześniej używanego zwrotu ojcowizna lub niemieckiego określenia Heimat. Ojczyzną prywatną jest obszar mniej więcej etnicznie jednolity, z którym jednostka się utożsamia i chce go zamieszkiwać. Pojęciem komplementarnym wobec ojczyzny prywatnej jest ojczyzna ideologiczna oznaczająca obszar państwa, w którym żyje jednostka lub często ziemie, które zostały utracone przez państwo, z którym się jednostka identyfikuje. Określenie wielkości ojczyzny prywatnej może być różne dla różnych jednostek. W niektórych przypadkach może być to miasto, często także region, powiat czy gmina ale też obszar wychodzący poza administracyjnie ustalone granice. Czasami określa się je wtedy jako "małe ojczyzny" wskazując na związek mieszkańców z pewną kulturą danego obszaru.
