脱分極、細胞内電極などの方法で細胞内外の電位差（電位差）をみると、興奮していない膜（膜）の内側は、外側に比べて電気的に部（負）である。 すなわち、細胞膜は、外側が電気的に正（正）に分極している。 この電位差を停止電位または膜電位（膜電位）とする。 だから膜を横切って電流を外向き（外向）に流す停止電位の大きさは減少する。 停止電位の減少は、膜の電位差の減少であり、膜の分極が消失していく過程任意には、この現象を脱分極（脫分極）とする。 一般的には、どのような原因であれ、停止電位が減少することを脱分極と呼ばれ、活動電位も広い意味の脱分極である。 탈분극 세포내 전극 등의 방법으로 세포내외의 전위차(電位差)를 보면, 흥분하고 있지 않은 막(膜)의 내측은 외측에 비하여 전기적으로 부(負)이다. 즉 세포막은 외측이 전기적으로 정(正)으로 분극하고 있다. 이 전위차를 정지전위 또는 막전위(膜電位)라고 한다. 그래서 세포막을 가로질러 전류를 외향(外向)으로 흘리면 정지전위의 크기는 감소한다. 정지전위의 감소는 막에 있는 전위차의 감소로서, 막의 분극이 소실하여 가는 과정임으로, 이 현상을 탈분극(脫分極)이라고 한다. 일반적으로는 어떠한 원인이건, 정지전위가 감소하는 것을 탈분극이라고 하며, 활동전위도 넓은 의미의 탈분극이다.
