フリゲートは軍艦の一種です。 この用語は、過去数世紀の様々な規模と役割の軍艦を指すために使用されています。 18世紀に、この用語は3つすべてのスクリーンマスト上に船とラインと長方形のスクリーンと同じ長さを持つ船を指しますが、より速くて軽い武器を持っています。 パトロールやエスコートの目的で使用されます。 ほとんどの場合、フリゲートには唯一のデッキがあり、船には砲塔があります。 19世紀の終わりには、フリゲートは当時最も強力な鉄砲艦であった。 現代海軍では、特に、水陸両用探査チーム、援助団体、貿易貨物船の対潜水艦戦闘員として、他の軍艦や貿易を保護するためにフリゲートが使用されています。 しかし、いわゆる "フリゲート"クラスは、コルベット、駆逐艦、エクスプローラ、戦闘船のようなものです。 フリゲート船長は、この船の名前に由来しています。

Frigat adalah sejenis kapal perang. Istilah ini digunakan bagi merujuk kapal perang pelbagai saiz dan peranan sejak beberapa kurun dahulu. Pada kurun ke-18, istilah ini merujuk kepada kapal yang memiliki panjang yang sama dengan ship-of-the-line dan layar bersegi empat pada kesemua tiga tiang layarnya, tetapi lebih laju dan memiliki persenjataan yang lebih ringan. Ia digunakan bagi tujuan rondaan dan pengiring. Dalam kebanyakan kes, frigat memiliki hanya satu dek persenjataan, sementara ships-of-the-line pula mempunyai dek meriam yang lebih banyak. Pada akhir kurun ke-19, frigat berperisai menjadi sejenis kapal perang ironclad yang paling berkuasa pada masa itu.
