Pada mulanya SMS dirancang sebagai sebahagian daripada GSM, tetapi pada masa sekarang, perkhidmatan ini ditawarkan oleh jaringan-jaringan mobil lainnya termasuk rangkaian UMTS. Satu pesanan ringkas SMS maksimum terdiri daripada 140 bait. Dengan kata lain, satu pesanan boleh memuatkan 140 aksara 8-bit, 160 aksara 7-bit atau 70 aksara 16-bit untuk bahasa Jepun, China dan Korea yang memakai aksara Kanji.
