An album is such a personal thing. It's something I always wanted to do. It's me doing me, singing as me.
I like to go to Africa purely with something to do. I'm not very comfortable getting into an armor-plated Land Rover and going to see things, with my hand gel, you know, it's not me at all. So I like to hang out and you know, really get to know people and try and do something that resonates with them.
People ask me if I have some kind of death wish, to keep saying the things I do. The answer is no: I would like to keep living. However, some things must be said, and there are times when silence becomes an accomplice to injustice.
There is something very utopian about what I do. But utopia is nothing more than a truth that the world is not yet ready to hear.
You definitely have to be focused at certain times in your life and in your career, but at the end of the day, there's only so much you can do. Then you just have to chock it up to fate.
Fortunately, I've never been very conscious and inhibited of what I have to do. The camera's my soul mate.
By the time I was 30, nobody would work with me. I was friendless, I was hopeless, I was suicidal, lost my family - I mean, it was bad. Bottomed out, didn't know what I was going to do. I actually thought I was going to be a chef - go to work in a kitchen someplace.
This is all new to me, these re-releases. I don't know how these things do. I don't know if it will be people who saw it originally or young people.
I don't like getting older, but there's nothing I can do. Hitting 60 wasn't great, but I think I was lucky in not being that beautiful; it can be really cruel on people who have been stunning.
For me, I'm focused on what I want to do. I know what I need to do to be a champion, so I'm working on it.
