Makronukleus kontroluje codzienne funkcje życiowe, mikronukleus odpowiada za życie seksualne. Podczas połączenia dwóch orzęsków, zwanego koniugacją, mikronukleusy wymieniają geny. Po tej wymianie powstają nowe makronukleusy. Później zmodyfikowane koniugacją orzeski mogą się rozmnażać przez podział.
