식물 플랑크톤이라는 용어는 주로 규조류, 녹조류, 금 조류, 과수박이 및 시아 노 박테리아로 구성된 광 영양 식물성 플랑크톤을 의미합니다. 식물 플랑크톤 생물학적으로 말하자면,이 종들은 부분적으로는 식물의 영역에, 부분적으로는 원생 생물에, 부분적으로는 Stramenopiles에, 부분적으로는 박테리아의 영역에 속합니다. 식물성 플랑크톤은 이산화탄소와 영양소의 광합성을 통해 일차 생산자로서 몸의 물질을 만들어 낸다. 따라서 식물성 플랑크톤은 서 있고 천천히 흐르는 물에서 자라는 자동 피라미드의 기초입니다. 식물성 플랑크톤은 동물 플랑크톤과 내륙 해역과 바다 밑에 서식하는 많은 동물에 의해 먹습니다. 플랭크톤 동물은 물에서 그것을 걸러 내기 위해 놀라운 그물 모양의 구조를 개발했습니다. 가장 현저하고 직접적인 먹이 사슬 중의 하나는 식물 플랑크톤 → 크릴 (Krill) → 고래 (Whale)입니다. 식물성 플랑크톤은 대기 중 산소의 50 ~ 80 %를 생산하는 것으로 추정된다. 해양 식물성 플랑크톤의 양은 주로 해수 온도 상승으로 1950 년 이후로 40 % 감소했다.

Phytoplankton Biologisch gesehen gehören diese Spezies nur zum Teil dem Reich der Pflanzen an, zum Teil dem der Protisten, dem der Stramenopilen und zum Teil dem Reich der Bakterien. Phytoplankton baut als Primärproduzent mit Hilfe der Photosynthese aus Kohlenstoffdioxid und Nährstoffen seine Körpersubstanz auf. Das Phytoplankton ist damit die Basis der autochthonen Nahrungspyramide in stehenden und langsam fließenden Gewässern. Phytoplankton wird gefressen vom Zooplankton und vielen Tieren, die am Boden der Binnengewässer und Meere leben. Plankton-Tiere haben erstaunliche netzartige Strukturen entwickelt, um es aus dem Wasser zu filtrieren. Eine der bemerkenswertesten und direktesten Nahrungsketten ist: Phytoplankton → Krill → Wal. Es wird geschätzt, dass Phytoplankton für die Produktion von 50 bis 80 % des Sauerstoffs in der Atmosphäre verantwortlich ist. Vor allem durch ansteigende Meerestemperaturen ist die Menge des marinen Phytoplanktons seit 1950 um 40 % zurückgegangen.
