Poleis, die; von πόλεις póleis) wird für gewöhnlich der typische Staatsverband im antiken Griechenland bezeichnet, der in der Regel greifbar ist als ein städtischer Siedlungskern (→ (Kern-)Stadt; gr. ἄστυ asty) mit dem dazugehörigen Umland (gr. χώρα chōra, ‚Chora‘). Dessen Bewohner wurden von den Einwohnern des urbanen Zentrums rechtlich nicht unterschieden. Die typische Polis war eine Bürgergemeinde bzw. ein Personenverband und definierte sich nicht primär über ihr Territorium, sondern über ihre Mitglieder (→ Bürger#Griechenland). Sie wurde zum klassischen Begriff für den Stadtstaat in der Antike; ob sie jedoch tatsächlich formal als solcher gelten kann, ist in der Forschung seit langem umstritten. Seit der Entstehung der Polis in archaischer Zeit (ca. 700–500 v. Chr.) und wegen der großen Zahl an Neugründungen im Hellenismus (323–30 v. Chr.
