공산주의는 생산 수단의 공통적 인 소유에 기반을 둔 사회 경제 시스템이며 계급, 돈 및 국가가 부재 한 것을 특징으로한다. 이 사회적 질서를 수립하는 것을 목표로하는 사회적, 정치적, 경제적 이데올로기와 운동을 포함한다. 마르크스 - 레닌 주의적 해석에서 공산주의를 발전시키려는 움직임은 동구권의 공산주의 국가와 서구 세계에서 가장 발전된 자본주의 국가 간의 치열한 경쟁을 목격 한 20 세기의 역사에 유의미한 영향을 미쳤다. 공산주의는 독일 철학자이자 사회 과학자 칼 마르크스 (Karl Marx)에 의해 처음으로 과학 이론으로 발전되었으며,이 과학적 접근 방식에 대한 집단적 이해는 오늘날 일반적으로 마르크스주의 (Marxism)라고 불린다. 마르크스 주의적 이해에서 공산주의는 사회주의의 경제적, 사회적 진보를 통해 필연적으로 결실을 맺을 인간 사회 진화의 종점이다.
