복합 엔진은 동일한 작동 유체로부터 에너지를 회수하고, 제 1 스테이지에서 제 2 스테이지를 통과하고, 경우에 따라 다른 후속 스테이지 또는 심지어 스테이지로 배기되는 하나 이상의 스테이지를 갖는 엔진이다. 원래 증기 엔진을보다 효율적으로 만들 수있는 수단으로 개발 된 엔진은 여러 단계의 엔진을 사용하여 내연 기관에도 사용되어 왔으며 계속 틈새 시장을 가지고 있습니다. 복합 엔진의 단계는 다음과 같이 서로 다르거 나 비슷한 기술 중 하나 일 수 있습니다. ▪ 터보 복합 엔진에서 실린더의 배기 가스는 터빈을 통과하며 두 단계는 서로 다릅니다. ▪ 복합 증기 기관차에서 증기는 고압 실린더 또는 실린더에서 저압 실린더 또는 실린더로 전달되며, 두 단계는 유사합니다. ▪ 삼중 확장 증기 엔진에서 증기는 크기가 증가하고 압력이 감소하는 세 개의 연속적인 실린더를 통과합니다. 그런 엔진은 증기의 황금 시대에 가장 흔한 해양 엔진이었습니다. 이러한 예와 복합 터빈은 엔진에서의 컴 파운딩의 유일한 용도는 아니지만 주요 사항입니다 (아래 참조).
