탄성 반동 이론은 지진 발생시 에너지가 어떻게 퍼지는 지에 대한 설명입니다. 단층의 반대편에있는 암석들은 힘과 교대를 받기 때문에 에너지를 축적하고 내부 강도가 초과 될 때까지 천천히 변형됩니다. 그때 갑작스런 움직임이 단층을 따라 발생하여 누적 된 에너지를 방출하고 암석들은 원래의 변형되지 않은 형태로 되돌아 간다. 지질학에서 탄성 반발 이론은 지진을 만족스럽게 설명하는 최초의 이론이었다. 이전에는 표면의 파열이이 이론에 의해 제안 된 반대가 아닌 강한 흔들림의 결과라고 생각했습니다. 고대 지진에 대한 문화적 설명은 종종 신화적인 일본 나 마즈 (Namazu)의 줄을 따라 진행되었습니다. 일본의 섬을 등지고 거대한 메기. 반신들, 즉 다이묘진은 움직이지 않게하기 위해 머리에 무거운 돌을 붙입니다. 한때 다이묘진이 혼란스러워 나마즈가 움직이고 지구가 떨린다.
