프론트 엔드 프로세서 또는 통신 프로세서는 SNA와 같은 다수의 네트워크 또는 터미널, 디스크 장치, 프린터 및 테이프 장치와 같은 다수의 주변 장치를 호스트 컴퓨터에 인터페이스하는 소형 컴퓨터입니다. 데이터는 고속 병렬 인터페이스를 사용하여 호스트 컴퓨터와 프런트 엔드 프로세서간에 전송됩니다. 프런트 엔드 프로세서는 일반적으로 통신 네트워크를 통해 느린 직렬 인터페이스를 사용하는 주변 장치와 통신합니다. 목적은 주변 장치 관리, 메시지 송수신, 패킷 어셈블리 및 디스 어셈블리, 오류 감지 및 오류 수정 작업을 호스트 컴퓨터에서 부하를 덜어내는 것입니다. 두 가지 예는 IBM 3705 통신 컨트롤러와 Burroughs 데이터 통신 프로세서입니다. 때때로 FEP는 통신 컨트롤러와 동의어이지만, 후자는 반드시 유연하지는 않습니다.
