신장에서는 네프론이라 불리는 관 모양의 구조물이 혈액을 걸러 소변을 만듭니다. 네프론의 시작 부분에서 사구체 / ɡlɒmɛrələs /는 혈액을 걸러내는 첫 번째 단계를 수행하는 모세 혈관 네트워크입니다. 사구체는 보우만 캡슐에 둘러싸여 있습니다. 혈장은 사구체의 모세 혈관을 통해 보우만 캡슐로 여과됩니다. 보우만 캡슐은 여과 물을 네프론의 일부인 세뇨관으로 배출합니다. 사구체는 구 심성 순환의 구 심성 동맥으로부터 혈액 공급을 받는다. 대부분의 다른 모세 혈관과 달리 사구체는 venule이 아닌 원심성 동맥으로 빠져 나간다. 이러한 세동맥의 저항은 사구체 내에서 고압을 발생시켜 혈액의 체액과 용해성 물질이 모세 혈관 밖으로 나와 보우만 캡슐 안으로 밀어 넣어지는 한외 여과 과정을 돕습니다. 사구체와 그 주변의 보우만 캡슐은 신장의 기본 단위 인 신장 소체를 구성합니다. 모든 사구체를 통해 혈액이 여과되는 속도, 즉 신장 기능의 척도는 사구체 여과율입니다.
