관성 감금 융합은 연료 타겟을 가열 및 압축하여 핵융합 반응을 시도하는 핵융합 에너지 연구의 일종으로, 일반적으로 중수소와 삼중 수소의 혼합물을 가장 많이 포함하는 펠렛의 형태로 사용됩니다. 연료를 압축하고 가열하기 위해, 에너지는 레이저 광, 전자 또는 이온의 고 에너지 빔을 사용하여 표적의 외부 층으로 전달되지만, 다양한 이유로, 현재까지 거의 모든 ICF 장치가 레이저를 사용하고있다. 가열 된 외층은 바깥쪽으로 폭발하여 나머지 목표물에 반력을 일으켜 안쪽으로 가속하여 목표물을 압축합니다. 이 과정은 목표를 통해 안쪽으로 이동하는 충격파를 생성하도록 설계되었습니다. 충분히 강력한 충격파 세트가 중앙의 연료를 압축하고 가열하여 융합 반응이 일어날 수 있습니다. 이러한 반응에 의해 방출 된 에너지는 주위의 연료를 가열 할 것이고, 가열이 충분히 강하면 융합을 시작할 수도 있습니다. ICF의 목적은이 점화 과정이 연료의 상당 부분을 연소시키는 연쇄 반응을 일으키는 "점화"로 알려진 조건을 생성하는 것입니다.
