대상 포진은 일반적으로 대상 포진으로 알려져 있으며 조나 (zona)로도 알려져 있으며, 몸의 한쪽면에 물집이 생기거나 통증이있는 피부염이 특징 인 바이러스 성 질환입니다. 수두 대상 포진 바이러스의 초기 감염은 일반적으로 어린이 및 젊은 성인에서 발생하는 급성, 수명이 짧은 수두 수두를 유발합니다. 일단 수두가 해소되면, 바이러스는 몸에서 제거되지 않고 초기 감염 후 수년 동안 포진 대상 포진을 일으킬 수 있습니다. 헤르페스 대상 포진은 이름 유사성에도 불구하고 포진 심플 렉스와 같은 질병이 아닙니다. 수두 대상 포진 바이러스와 단순 포진 바이러스는 모두 동일한 바이러스 서브 패밀리 Alphaherpesvirinae에 속합니다. 수두의 초기 에피소드가 끝난 후, 수두 대상 포진 바이러스는 신경 세포 기관에 잠복 해 있고 증상을 일으키지 않고 척수 신경, 뇌신경 또는 자율 신경절의 비 신경 세포 위성에 자주 머물러있게됩니다. 초기 감염 후 수십 년 또는 수십 년 후에 바이러스는 신경 세포에서 분출하여 신경 축삭 아래로 이동하여 신경 부위의 피부에 바이러스 감염을 일으킬 수 있습니다.
