한국어 사전에서 프로드러그 의 정의
프로드러그 투여후에 생체내에서 목적으로 하는 화합물로 변화되는 것으로 정의된다. 유용한 약물임에도 불구하고 부작용, 안정성, 용해성, 흡수성, 작용시간등에서 적합치 않는 성질을 가지고 있는 것에 화학적 수식을 가해서 임상사용 가능하게 한 것이다. 예를 들면 위장장애가 많은 비스테로이드 항염증약인 프로드러그가 개발되고 있는데, 불활성 물질로서 소화관에서 흡수되고 그 후 간장등에서 대사되어서 활성형의 물질로 변화해서 항염증 작용을 발휘하는 것으로 위장장애의 경감이 기대되고 있다.
