Petroleum merupakan sejenis cecair gelap dan pekat yang juga dipanggil emas hitam. Istilah "petroleum" pertama kali digunakan di dalam karya bertajuk De Natura Fossilium, diterbitkan pada tahun 1546 oleh seorang pakar mineralogi berbangsa Jerman bernama Georg Bauer, juga dikenali sebagai Georgius Agricola. Petroleum biasanya merupakan sebatian pelbagai hidrokarbon, terutamanya siri alkana, dan biasanya didapati di bahagian atas kerak bumi. Kegunaan utama petroleum ialah sebagai sumber tenaga untuk menggerakkan kenderaan. Selain sebagai bahan bakar dan pelincir, petroleum turut digunakan dalam pelbagai industri seperti pembuatan pelarut, baja serta racun perosak, sabun dan detergen, pewangi, plastik, bahan letupan dan lain-lain.
