Perkataan "televisyen" terbentuk dari gabungan perkataan tele dari bahasa Greek dan visio dari bahasa Latin. Peti televisyen yang dijual sejak akhir 1930-an sudah menjadi salah satu alat penerima komunikasi utama dalam rumah, perniagaan dan institusi, khususnya sebagai sumber hiburan dan berita.
