Belum terdapat apa-apa bukti yang mengatakan bahawa planet bumi telah dikunjungi makhluk asing dari planet lain. Penggunaan istilah "piring terbang" pertama kali digunakan oleh juruterbang Kenneth Arnold yang melihat sembilan objek terbang aneh dalam suatu formasi di atas Gunung Rainier di pergunungan Cascade, Washington.
