W czerwcu 2014 w wyniku ataku ekstremistów Mosul został zajęty przez Islamskie Państwo w Iraku i Lewancie. Doszło do licznych zbrodni oraz wygnania mniejszości religijnych i etnicznych z miasta, a także celowego niszczenia zabytków, m.in. starożytnych księgozbiorów w bibliotece w Mosulu oraz posągów w muzeum w Mosulu.
