GPS (Global Positioning System) 시스템은 위성 수신 장치로, 수신 장치가 위성 수신기의 위치에 있으면 언제든지 지구상의 모든 기상 조건에 대한 시간별 정보는 물론 위치 정보도 함께 제공합니다. 네 GPS 위성의 시야. 두 개의 위성 네비게이션 시스템이 가동 중이다 : 미국의 GPS와 러시아의 GLONASS. 또한 유럽 연합 갈릴레오와 중국 나침반의 두 가지 시스템이 있습니다. 미국 시스템은 미국 정부 소유이며 미국 국방부를 통해 운영됩니다. 처음에는 그 용도가 독점적으로 군대 였고, 현재 민간인이 자유롭게 사용할 수 있습니다. 그러나 전쟁 민간인 사용이 유지 될 것이라는 보장은 거의 없으며 이는 항해에 심각한 위험을 초래할 수 있습니다. GPS는 이전의 구식 네비게이션 시스템의 한계를 극복하기 위해 1963 년에 만들어졌습니다.

O sistema de posicionamento global é um sistema de navegação por satélite que fornece a um aparelho receptor móvel a sua posição, assim como informação horária, sobre todas condições atmosféricas, a qualquer momento e em qualquer lugar na Terra, desde que o receptor se encontre no campo de visão de quatro satélites GPS. Encontram-se em funcionamento dois sistemas de navegação por satélite: o GPS americano e o GLONASS russo. Existem também dois outros sistemas em implementação: o Galileo da União Europeia e o Compass chinês. O sistema americano é detido pelo Governo dos Estados Unidos e operado através do Departamento de Defesa dos Estados Unidos. Inicialmente o seu uso era exclusivamente militar, estando actualmente disponível para uso civil gratuito. No entanto, poucas garantias apontam para que em tempo de guerra o uso civil seja mantido, o que resultaria num sério risco para a navegação. O GPS foi criado em 1963 para superar as limitações dos anteriores sistemas de navegação já ultrapassados.
