rut. iver „așchie”, deoarece se întrebuințează adesea ca ivăr un fragment de băț (după Cihac, II, 152; Tiktin; Conev 79, direct de la
iver).
Der. din
germ. Wirbel „piuliță” prin intermediul
săs. virol (Lacea,
Dacor., III, 745; DAR), nu este probabilă. Este dublet al lui
livăr, (
var. livără),
s. n. (mîner; manivelă; flașnetă),
cf. Cihac, II, 175 și Tiktin (Tiktin îl derivă pe
livără „flașnetă” din
gr. λύρα, și Meyer 244 din
alb.).
