Veba, Yersinia pestis adındaki bakteri tarafından oluşturulan enfeksiyon hastalıklarına verilen genel isimdir. Antik Çağlar'dan itibaren tanınmış bir hastalıktır. Lakabı ¨Kara Ölüm¨dür. Orta Çağ'da 1347-1353 arasında, Avrupa nüfusunun üçte birinin kaybedilmesinden sorumludur. Modern antibiyotiklerle tedavi edilebilir. Gelişmiş ülkelerin tamamında ve gelişmekte olan ülkelerin pek çoğunda ortadan kaldırılmış olmasına rağmen Asya ve Afrika kıtalarının bazı bölgelerinde hâlen görülebilmektedir. Kendini 4 şekilde gösterebilir: ▪ Bubonik ▪ Septisemik ▪ Pnömonik ▪ Gastro-intestinal Bulaşıcı ve öldürücü bir hastalıktır. Vebanın farelerden bulaştığı kanısı yaygındır, ancak gerçekte bakteriyi yayan bir tür piredir. Ve fareler de bu hastalığın kurbanıdırlar. Tarihte veba salgınlarından önce şehirlerde büyük miktarda fare ölümlerinin meydana geldiği görülmüş, ölü farelerle temas eden insanların, pire ısırması nedeniyle bu hastalığa maruz kaldıkları tespit edilmiştir. Hastalık, mikrop kapıldıktan 2-8 gün içerisinde kendini gösterir.
