Rhodopsin, wegen seiner roten Farbe auch Sehpurpur genannt, ist eines der Sehpigmente in der Netzhaut der Augen von Wirbeltieren und in den Photorezeptoren von Wirbellosen. Im menschlichen Auge ist das Rhodopsin in den Stäbchen der Netzhaut für das Hell-Dunkel-Sehen verantwortlich. Mutationen im Opsin-Gen können zu einer Retinitis pigmentosa und erblicher Nachtblindheit führen. Daneben gibt es aber auch verschiedene andere Photorezeptoren, die sich in ihrer Empfindlichkeit für Licht bestimmter Wellenlängen voneinander unterscheiden. So beruht das Farbensehen mit Hilfe der Zapfen auf drei verschiedenen Ausprägungen des Iodopsins, die sich nur geringfügig in ihren Aminosäuresequenzen unterscheiden.
