अनुप्रयोग सॉफ्टवेअर एखाद्या विशिष्ट अनुप्रयोगासाठी ऑपरेशनसाठी डिझाइन केलेल्या एक किंवा अधिक प्रोग्रामचा संच आहे. अनुप्रयोग सॉफ्टवेअर स्वतः चालवू शकत नाही परंतु ती अंमलात आणण्यासाठी सिस्टम सॉफ्टवेअरवर अवलंबून आहे. उदाहरणार्थ: एमएस वर्ड, एमएस एक्सेल, टाली सॉफ्टवेअर, लायब्ररी मॅनेजमेंट सिस्टीम, बिलींग सिस्टम इत्यादी. या सॉफ्टवेअरचा वापर सॉफ्टवेअर सॉफ्टवेअर म्हणून ओळखला जाणारा दुसर्या प्रकारचा कॉम्प्यूटर प्रोग्रॅमशी करावयाचा आहे जो संगणकाच्या क्षमतेचे व्यवस्थापन व समेष्ठित करतो. वापरकर्त्याला थेट फायदा मिळत नाही. सिस्टीम सॉफ्टवेअर अनुप्रयोगास कार्य करते, जे नंतर वापरकर्त्यास कार्य करते. उदाहरणे लेखा सॉफ्टवेअर, एंटरप्राइझ सॉफ्टवेअर, ग्राफिक्स सॉफ्टवेअर, मीडिया प्लेअर आणि कार्यालय संच समाविष्ट आहेत. बहुतेक ऍप्लिकेशन प्रोग्राम्स डॉक्युमेंट्स सह मुख्यत्वे देतात. अनुप्रयोग संगणकासह आणि त्याच्या सिस्टम सॉफ्टवेअरसह एकत्रित केले जाऊ शकतात किंवा वेगळे प्रकाशित केले जाऊ शकतात आणि विद्यापीठ प्रकल्प म्हणून कोडित केले जाऊ शकते. अनुप्रयोग सॉफ्टवेअर विशिष्ट संगणकीय प्लॅटफॉर्म किंवा सिस्टम सॉफ्टवेअरची एका विशिष्ट हेतूसाठी सामर्थ्य लागू करते.

Application software is a set of one or more programs designed to carry out operations for a specific application. Application software cannot run on itself but it is dependent on system software to execute. For example: MS Word, MS Excel, Tally software, Library management system, billing system etc.. The term is used to contrast such software with another type of computer program referred to as system software, which manages and integrates a computer's capabilities but does not directly perform tasks that benefit the user. The system software serves the application, which in turn serves the user. Examples include accounting software, enterprise software, graphics software, media players, and office suites. Many application programs deal principally with documents. Applications may be bundled with the computer and its system software or published separately, and can be coded as university projects. Application software applies the power of a particular computing platform or system software to a particular purpose.
