अस्शूर, शेवटच्या अश्शूरी राज्याचे अवशेष शहर आहे. शहराचे अवशेष टायग्रीस नदीच्या पश्चिम किनार्यावर वसलेले आहेत, आधुनिक युगामधील उपनद्या लिबर्ट झब नदीसह संगमच्या उत्तरेकडील भागात, अधिक स्पष्टपणे अल-शिरकत जिल्ह्यात आहे. तिसरी सहस्रावधी इ.स.पूर्व ते ते 14 व्या शतकापर्यंत हे शहर व्यापण्यात आले होते. तामळलेने लोकसंख्येचा एक नरसंहार केला होता. ऐशूर हे शहराच्या मुख्य देवतेचे नाव देखील आहे. त्याला अश्शूरी राज्यातील सर्वोच्च देव आणि अश्शूरी राज्याच्या संरक्षक म्हणून ओळखले जात असे. मेसोपोटेमियन पौराणिक कथेत ते बॅबिलोनियन मर्दुकच्या बरोबरीचे होते. असुरची जागा युनेस्कोच्या जागतिक वारसा स्थानाची आहे, परंतु 2003 मध्ये धोकादायक असणा-या जागतिक वारसा स्थळांच्या यादीत या भागामुळे आणि त्यातील प्रस्तावित धरणाच्या मुळाशी तो भाग होता. जागा.
