ऊर्धपातन ही मिश्रणातील घटकांच्या विविध अस्थिरतेच्या आधारावर द्रव मिश्रणावरुन vaporisation आणि condensation द्वारे घटक घटक वेगळे करण्याची प्रक्रिया आहे. ऊर्धपातन एक युनिट ऑपरेशन किंवा भौतिक विभक्त प्रक्रिया आहे, आणि रासायनिक प्रतिक्रिया नाही. व्यावसायिकरित्या, ऊर्धपातन अनेक अनुप्रयोग आहे. हे क्रूड ऑइल वेगळे वाहतूक, वीज निर्मिती आणि हीटिंग यांसारख्या विशिष्ट वापरासाठी अधिक अपूर्णांकांमध्ये वेगळे करण्यासाठी वापरले जाते. औद्योगिक वापरासाठी त्याचे घटक-विशेषत: ऑक्सीजन, नायट्रोजन, आणि आर्गॉन-विभक्त करण्यासाठी हवा डिस्टिल्ड आहे. विविध उपयोगांसाठी लिक्विड रसायने संश्लेषणानंतर अशुद्ध पदार्थ काढून टाकण्यासाठी आणि न वापरलेले प्रारंभिक साहित्य आंबलेल्या द्रावणाचे ऊर्ध्वलते अति मद्यपान सामग्रीसह डिस्टिल्ड पेये बनवू शकतात. ज्या जागेवर ऊर्धपातन केले जाते, विशेषत: अल्कोहोल विरहीत, त्यांना डिस्टीलरी म्हणून ओळखले जाते. तरीही ऊर्धपातन करण्यासाठी वापरले उपकरणे आहे.
