ल्युकोट्रीएन्स हे एंजाइम ऍराकेडोनेट 5-लिपीजनिजेन्स द्वारे एराकायडोनिक ऍसिडच्या ऑक्सिडेशनद्वारे ल्युकोसाइट्स मध्ये तयार केलेल्या इकोसैनियड इन्फ्लोमेटरी इनडिएटर्सचे एक कुटुंब आहेत. त्यांचे नाव सुचवते त्याप्रमाणे, ल्युकोट्रिअन्स प्रथम ल्यूकोसाइट्समध्ये शोधले गेले परंतु नंतर त्यांना इतर रोगप्रतिकारक पेशींमध्ये आढळून आले. ल्युकोट्रीयेन लिपिड सिग्नलचा उपयोग रोगप्रतिकारक प्रतिसादांचे नियमन करण्यासाठी त्या पेशी किंवा शेजारच्या पेशी निर्माण करणा-या सेलवर करतात. ल्युकोट्रीनची निर्मिती सहसा हिस्टामाइन व प्रोस्टॅग्लांडिन्सच्या उत्पादनासह होते, जे देखील दाहक मध्यस्थ म्हणून कार्य करते. त्यांच्या भुमिकांपैकी एक म्हणजे ब्रॉन्किलोल्सचे अस्तर असलेल्या चिकट स्नायूंमधील आकुंचन ट्रिगर करणे; दमा आणि अॅलर्जिक नाइलिनाइटिसमध्ये सूज येणेचे त्यांचे मुळ कारण आहे. ल्युकोट्रीयनचे उत्पादन किंवा क्रियाकलाप बाधा देऊन या विकारांवर उपचार करण्यासाठी ल्युकोट्रीएनच्या प्रतिपक्षींचा वापर केला जातो.
