"खाजगी" या शब्दाचा अर्थ "लबाडीने" या शब्दापासून बनलेला आहे. इंडो-युरोपियन भाषांमध्ये अनेक खाजगी उपसर्ग आहेत; परंतु प्रत्यक्षात प्रत्यय किंवा अधिक स्वतंत्र घटक देखील होऊ शकतात.
