सीरियल पोझिशन इफेक्ट म्हणजे एखाद्या मालिकेतील सर्वोत्कृष्ट मालिकातील पहिला व शेवटचा आयटम आठवणे आणि मध्यम गोष्टी सर्वात खराब झाल्याची प्रवृत्ती. हार्मन एबिंगहॉस यांनी हा शब्द स्वत: वर केलेल्या अभ्यासाद्वारे मांडला होता, याचा अर्थ असा होतो की अचूकता लक्षात घेता अभ्यासाच्या सूचीमध्ये आयटमच्या स्थितीचे फलन म्हणून बदलत असते. कुठल्याही ऑर्डरमध्ये आयटमची एखादी गोष्ट आठवण्याबद्दल विचारणा केल्यानंतर, सूचीच्या शेवटी लोक पुन्हा रिकॉल करायला लागले आहेत, त्या वस्तूंची सर्वोत्तम यादी पूर्वीच्या यादीतील बाबींपैकी, पहिल्या काही आयटम मधल्या वस्तूंपेक्षा अधिक वेळा आठवण करून देतात. सर्वश्रेष्ठता प्रभाव एक सुचविलेल्या कारण आहे की सादर प्रारंभीक गोष्टी अधिक प्रभावीपणे दीर्घकालीन मेमरीमध्ये संग्रहित केली जातात कारण त्यांच्यासाठी समर्पित प्रक्रिया मोठ्या प्रमाणावर होते. जेव्हा आयटम त्वरीत सादर केले जातात तेव्हा प्रथमच प्रभाव कमी केला जातो आणि हळूवारपणे सादर केला जातो. महत्त्वाची सादरीकरण सूची प्राधान्यता प्रभाव कमी करण्यासाठी आढळली आहे. पावसाच्या प्रभावाचा एक सिद्धांत असा आहे की जेव्हा हे आठवडे मागितले जाते तेव्हा हे आयटम कामकाजाच्या मेमरीमध्ये अजूनही उपस्थित असतात. कुठल्याही गोष्टीचा लाभ घेता येणार नाही.
