पुनरुत्पादन ही जैविक प्रक्रिया आहे ज्याद्वारे नवीन "संतती" वैयक्तिक जीव त्यांच्या "पालक" पासून तयार केले जातात. पुनरुत्पादन सर्व ज्ञात जीवनाचे मूलभूत वैशिष्ट्य आहे; पुनरुत्पादनाचा परिणाम म्हणून प्रत्येक स्वतंत्र जीव अस्तित्वात असतो. प्रजोत्पादनाची ओळख पटलेली पद्धती सामान्यपणे दोन मुख्य प्रकारांमध्ये एकत्रित केली जातात: लैंगिक आणि अलैंगिक. अलैंगिक पुनरुत्पादन मध्ये, एक व्यक्ती त्या प्रजाती दुसर्या व्यक्ती सह सहभाग न करता पुनरुत्पादित करू शकता. एक जिवाणू सेलची दोन कन्या पेशींमध्ये विभाजन करणे हा अलैंगिक पुनरुत्पादनाचा एक उदाहरण आहे. असुविधाजनक प्रजोत्पादन मात्र एकल-कोशिक जीवांपर्यंत मर्यादित नाही. बहुतेक वनस्पतींमध्ये अस्ताव्यस्त पुनरुत्पादन करण्याची क्षमता असते आणि माईकोसेपुरास स्मिथ्या संपूर्णपणे अलैंगिक मार्गांनी पुनरुत्पादित वाटतात. लैंगिक प्रजननासाठी विशेषत: दोन व्यक्ती किंवा गीमेट्सचा समावेश असणे आवश्यक आहे, एका विरुद्ध प्रकारच्या लिंग पासून क्लॉजिंगच्या माध्यमातून जीवांचा प्रसारही होऊ शकतो.
