शॉर्ट मेसेज सेवा हा फोन, वेब किंवा मोबाईल कम्युनिकेशन सिस्टमचा मजकूर संदेशन सेवा घटक आहे. हे फिक्स्ड लाइन किंवा मोबाईल फोन उपकरणांना लहान मजकूर संदेशांची देवाणघेवाण करण्यास परवानगी देण्यासाठी मानक संप्रेषण प्रोटोकॉल वापरते. 2010 च्या अखेरीस अंदाजे 3.5 अब्ज सक्रिय वापरकर्ते किंवा सर्व मोबाईलधारकांच्या सुमारे 80% एसएमएस हा सर्वाधिक मोठ्या प्रमाणावर वापरला जाणारा डेटा अनुप्रयोग होता.
