युरोपातील सर्व सोव्हिएत आणि युनायटेड स्टेट्स इंटरमीडिएड श्रेणीतील अण्वस्त्र क्षेपणास्त्रे काढून घेण्याच्या अमेरिकन प्रस्तावाला "शून्य पर्याय" असे नाव देण्यात आले होते. त्यानंतर या शब्दाचा विस्तार सर्वत्र सर्व विभक्त शस्त्रे नष्ट करण्याच्या दृष्टीचे वर्णन करण्यासाठी करण्यात आला.
