Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. bukanlah pengasas agama baru, sebaliknya menjadi pemulih keimanan monoteistik ajaran nabi-nabi terdahulu. Tradisi Islam menegaskan bahawa agama Yahudi dan Kristian memutarbalikkan wahyu yang Allah berikan kepada nabi-nabi ini dengan mengubah teks atau memperkenalkan tafsiran palsu, atau kedua-duanya. Amalan keagamaan Islam termasuklah Rukun Islam, yang merupakan lima tanggungjawab yang menyatukan Muslim ke dalam sebuah masyarakat.
