Kod genetik adalah peraturan yang mana kumpulan tiga kumpulan nucleobases berturut-turut - yang dipanggil triplet atau kodon, yang terletak di dalam asid nukleik - diterjemahkan ke dalam asid amino. Terjemahan ini, yang dipanggil penterjemahan, berlaku dalam mengikat asid amino ke pelbagai asid ribonukleik pemindahan yang mana asid amino disusun atau diaktifkan untuk pemasangan mereka ke dalam protein. Die Transfer-Ribonukleinsäuren unterscheiden sich durch ihr an einer prominenten Molekülstelle befindliches Nukleotid-Triplett, das aus jeweils drei Nukleotiden besteht, die den Nukleotiden eines bestimmten Codons entsprechen, also ein dreigliedriges Anticodon bilden. Codon und Anticodon passen spezifisch zueinander und ihnen ist nach dem genetischen Code eine bestimmte Aminosäure zugeordnet. An jede Transfer-Ribonukleinsäure wird diejenige Aminosäure gebunden, für die das zum Anticodon der tRNA passende Codon steht.
