Matrilineal atau penggantian ibu merujuk kepada penghantaran dan transmisi ciri-ciri sosial dan kepunyaan eksklusif melalui garis wanita dari ibu kepada anak perempuan. Dalam hal ini, perpindahan hubungan saudara, jawatan sosial, pejabat, prestij, keistimewaan dan harta dari satu generasi ke generasi berikutnya adalah satu pihak berdasarkan keturunan wanita. Barisan lelaki dan ibunya atau bapanya tetap tidak relevan. Anak-anak tidak diambil kira dalam penggantian ibu mereka, kerana mereka tidak boleh meneruskan garis ibunya secara mandiri: Selepas perkahwinan, anak-anak dikira sebagai keluarga isteri, mereka menanggung nama keluarga mereka dan meneruskan garisnya, bukan garis suami atau ibunya. Satu siri garis keturunan matrilineal mengandungi semua wanita yang dilahirkan dalam urutan perempuan yang berterusan dari "ibu biasa", persoalan kepincangan anak-anak tidak relevan. Garis ini juga dirujuk sebagai keturunan rahim, dahulu juga sebagai "ibu".

Matrilinearität oder Mutterfolge bezeichnet die Weitergabe und Vererbung von sozialen Eigenschaften und Besitz ausschließlich über die weibliche Linie von Müttern an Töchter. Dabei erfolgt die Übertragung von Verwandtschaftsbeziehungen, sozialen Positionen, Ämtern, Ansehen, Privilegien und Eigentum von einer Generation an die nächste einlinig nach der Abstammung der Frau. Die Linie des Mannes und seiner Mutter oder seines Vaters bleibt ohne Bedeutung. Söhne werden in der mütterlichen Erbfolge nicht berücksichtigt, da sie die Linie ihrer Mutter nicht eigenständig fortsetzen können: Nach einer Heirat werden Kinder zur Familie der Ehefrau gezählt, sie tragen ihren Familiennamen und führen ihre Linie weiter, nicht die Linie des Ehemanns oder seiner Mutter. Eine rein matrilineare Abstammungsreihe enthält alle in einer ununterbrochenen weiblichen Abfolge von einer „Stammmutter“ herstammenden Frauen, dabei spielt die Frage der Ehelichkeit von Nachkommen keine Rolle. Diese Linie wird auch als uterine Deszendenz bezeichnet, früher auch als „mutterrechtlich“.
