Perkataan aeon / iːɒn /, juga ditulis eon, yang pada asalnya bermaksud "hidup" atau "menjadi", walaupun ia kemudian bermaksud "umur", "selamanya" atau "selama-lamanya". Ia adalah transliterasi Latin dari kata Yunani koine ὁ αἰών, dari αἰϝών kuno. Dalam Homer ia biasanya merujuk kepada kehidupan atau jangka hayat.
