Benzoin disintesis dari benzaldehyde dalam pemeluwapan benzoin. Ia adalah kiral dan ia wujud sebagai sepasang enantiomer: -benzoin dan -benzoin. Benzoin bukan merupakan penyusun resin benzoin yang diperolehi dari pokok benzoin atau tin benzoin. Komponen utama dalam produk semulajadi ini adalah asid benzoik.
