Mereka bertentangan dengan negara-negara membangun, yang sedang dalam proses perindustrian, atau negara-negara yang belum dimajukan, yang pra-industri dan hampir seluruhnya agraris. Menurut Tabung Kewangan Antarabangsa, ekonomi maju merangkumi 65.8% daripada KDNK nominal global dan 52.1% daripada KDNK global pada tahun 2010.
