Mana-mana air di laut atau tasik yang tidak dekat dengan bahagian bawah atau berhampiran pantai boleh dikatakan berada di zon pelagik. Perkataan pelagik berasal dari πέλαγος Yunani Kuno, yang bermaksud "laut terbuka". Zon pelagis boleh dipikir dari segi silinder imajiner atau lajur air yang keluar dari permukaan laut hampir ke bawah. Keadaan berubah lebih mendalam ke dalam lajur air; tekanan meningkat, suhu jatuh dan terdapat cahaya yang kurang. Di dalam air, zon pelagik kadang-kadang dipanggil zon terbuka laut dan boleh dibezakan dengan air yang berhampiran dengan pantai atau di atas landas benua.
