Benteng adalah pembinaan tentera atau bangunan yang direka untuk mempertahankan wilayah dalam peperangan, dan juga digunakan untuk mengukuhkan pemerintahan di rantau semasa masa damai. Manusia telah membina karya pertahanan selama beribu-ribu tahun, dalam pelbagai reka bentuk yang semakin rumit. Istilah ini berasal dari bahasa Latin fortis dan facere. Beberapa penempatan di Tamadun Lembah Indus adalah bandar-bandar pertama yang diperkuatkan. Di zaman kuno, dinding batu besar telah dibina di Mycenaean Greece, seperti tapak kuno Mycenae. Sebuah Phrourion adalah koleksi bangunan yang diperkuatkan digunakan sebagai garrison ketenteraan dan bersamaan dengan castellum Rom atau kubu Inggeris. Pembinaan ini terutamanya berkhidmat untuk menara tontonan, untuk menjaga jalan, pas, dan tanah tertentu yang merugikan kerajaan. Walaupun lebih kecil daripada kubu sebenar, pembinaan ini bertindak sebagai pengawal sempadan dan bukannya satu titik kuat untuk menonton dan mengekalkan sempadan.
