Perkataan "swastika" berasal dari Sanskrit svastika - "su" digabungkan dengan "asti", bersama dengan akhiran kecil "ka". Swastika secara harfiah bermaksud "kesejahteraan." Amalan biasa bagi orang Hindu untuk menarik simbol Swastika ke pintu dan pintu masuk ke rumah mereka semasa perayaan, yang dipercayai melambangkan jemputan kepada dewi Lakshmi. Nama "sauwastika" kadang-kadang diberikan kepada simbol lengan kiri, yang merupakan imej cermin swastika.
