Hadis dalam penggunaan agama sering diterjemahkan sebagai 'tradisi', yang bermaksud laporan ajaran, perbuatan dan kata-kata nabi Muhammad. Sastera hadith dikumpulkan dari laporan lisan yang hadir dalam masyarakat sekitar masa kompilasi mereka, selepas kematian Muhammad. Hadis-hadis ini telah membentuk asas kontroversial model Syariah "hukum Islam", walaupun terdapat percanggahan yang berkaitan dengan Al-Quran itu sendiri, seperti mengenai hukuman Zina dalam hadith yang bertentangan dengan Al-Quran, kadar Zakat, takrifan Ribba dan lain-lain. Hadis juga mempunyai pengaruh mendalam untuk membentuk komentar-komentar mengenai Quran.
