Hysteresis adalah kebergantungan output sistem bukan sahaja pada input semasa, tetapi juga pada sejarah input masa lalu. Ketergantungan timbul kerana sejarah mempengaruhi nilai sebuah negara dalaman. Untuk meramalkan output masa depannya, sama ada negeri dalaman atau sejarahnya mesti diketahui. Hysteresis berlaku dalam bahan-bahan ferromagnetik dan bahan ferroelektrik, serta dalam ubah bentuk beberapa bahan sebagai tindak balas kepada gaya yang berbeza-beza. Dalam sistem semula jadi histeresis sering dikaitkan dengan perubahan tak termodinamik yang tidak dapat dipulihkan. Banyak sistem buatan direka untuk herteresis: contohnya, dalam termostat dan pencetus Schmitt, histeresis digunakan untuk mengelakkan pertukaran pantas yang tidak diingini.
