Isotop protein adalah salah satu daripada beberapa bentuk protein yang sama. Bentuk protein yang berlainan boleh dihasilkan daripada penderaan gen yang sangat rapat - sebagai 'protein yang sama' atau 'protein' tidak masuk akal untuk paralog yang sangat tersimpul yang timbul daripada gen nenek moyang tunggal yang diduplikasi berbilion tahun yang lalu dan seterusnya menyimpang sangat urutan, struktur dan fungsi-atau mungkin timbul daripada gen yang sama dengan splicing alternatif.
