Magnetron rongga adalah tiub vakum berkuasa tinggi yang menjana gelombang mikro menggunakan interaksi arus elektron dengan medan magnet sambil bergerak melewati satu siri lubang logam terbuka. Tandan elektron yang melewati bukaan ke rongga mengagumkan ayunan gelombang radio di rongga, agak sama dengan cara rentetan gitar mengibaskan bunyi dalam kotak bunyi. Kekerapan gelombang mikro yang dihasilkan, frekuensi resonan, ditentukan oleh dimensi fizikal 'rongga'. Tidak seperti tiub gelombang mikro yang lain, seperti klestron dan tiub gelombang perjalanan, magnetron tidak boleh berfungsi sebagai penguat, meningkatkan kuasa isyarat gelombang mikro yang digunakan, ia berfungsi semata-mata sebagai pengayun, menghasilkan isyarat gelombang mikro daripada kuasa arus langsung yang dibekalkan kepada tiub. Bentuk pertama tiub magnetron, magnetron berpecah-anod, dicipta oleh Albert Hull pada tahun 1920, tetapi ia tidak mampu frekuensi tinggi dan tidak banyak digunakan. Peranti serupa telah diuji dengan banyak pasukan melalui tahun 1920-an dan 30-an. Tiub magnetron rongga yang 'resonan' moden dicipta oleh John Randall dan Harry Boot pada tahun 1940 di University of Birmingham, England.
