Mikrobiologi adalah "komuniti ekologi mikroorganisma yang komensal, simbiotik, dan patogenik yang secara literal berkongsi ruang badan kita." Istilah ini pada asalnya dicipta oleh Joshua Lederberg, yang berpendapat pentingnya mikroorganisma yang mendiami tubuh manusia dalam kesihatan dan penyakit.
