Perkataan mnemonik berasal dari perkataan Yunani kuno μνημονικός, yang bermaksud "ingatan, atau berkaitan dengan ingatan" dan berkaitan dengan Mnemosyne, nama dewi ingatan dalam mitologi Yunani.
