Dalam puisi, istilah monody telah menjadi khusus untuk merujuk kepada puisi di mana seseorang meratapi kematian orang lain. (Dalam konteks kesusasteraan Yunani kuno, monumen, μονῳδία hanya dapat merujuk kepada puisi lirik dinyanyikan oleh seorang pelukis, bukan oleh paduan suara.)
